as we all know，trees are very useful. they are of great benefit to man as follows：first，trees provide us with wood and other products；
second，their roots can allow the rain to sink in and keep the soil，so they help to prevent droughts and floods. trees can clean air and beautiful life.
unfortunately，nowadays in many parts of the world lots of people fail to realize the importance of trees. they have cut trees down in large numbers without a plan，which makes the soil washed away. they don"t know where there no trees，the rain washed away the surface of the soil and this causes floods.
we ought to plant trees each year and carefully look after new trees in order not to make the forest slowly disappear. only" in this way can we make the forest serve man forever.

众所周知，树有很多的用处，人类从中得到如下很多益处：第一，树给我们提供了木材和其他一些产品。第二，它们的根能让雨水渗进并保持乒壤以免被水冲走，所以树木可以预防旱灾和水灾。同时树木还帮我们净化空气，美化生活。
不幸的是，今天世界上很多地方人们没有意识到树木的重要性。他们无计划的大量砍伐树木，这样使得土壤被破坏，他们不知道那没有树的地方，一下雨就把土壤的表层冲走了，导致洪灾。

once man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. there were few people on the earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited.
today things are different. the world has become too crowded. we are using up our natural resources,and polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. if we continue to do this, human life on earth will not survive.
we realize that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. yet,with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught.we know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear. yet, we continue to use powerful machines to cut down more and more trees. we see that if rivers are polluted with waste products, we will die. yet, waste products are
still put into rivers.
we know that if the population continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there won"t be enough food.what can we do to solve these problems?
if we eat more vegetables and less meat, there will be more food available. land for crops feeds five times more people than land where animals are kept. our natural resources will last longer if we learn to recycie them.
the world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
finally, if we educate people to think about the problems we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.

如果人们使用现代化的生育控制方法，世界人口就不会增长如此迅猛。

the film ‘20XX’ successfully brings the global attention to our environmental protection. in recent years, continual extreme meteorological disasters and geologic hazards make many people doubt that, the prophecy of 20XX is true. ‘20XX’is just a film, but our earth is really not calm. how to protect our environment? what we need is practical action not just one slogan.
it seems to me that many people or even countries lack a sense of responsibility. the earthquake of japan caused the nuclear leak of fukushima nuclear power station. when the whole world was worried about the dangerous situation, japan unilaterally declared that they had no choice but pulled the polluted water contained radio material into the ocean. i don’t want to emphasize more about how terrible for the halo bios once the water is in the ocean, or how great threat to the ecological system. the only thing i want to say is:”japan, you are shrinking from this responsibility”
the earth is our common home which needs our common protection. one country’s strength is never enough. so i think environmental protection needs global cooperation.
in addition, the government should enact and improve rules and regulations and enforce laws strictly. it’s necessary to set up a legal aid fund aiming to help the people who participate in the environmental
protection enrolled. the government should establish long-term consciousness, coordinated development of economy and environment protection.

Do you often use batteriesThen do you know it takes 50 times more energy to make them than they produceAnd just one simple battery can pollute as much water as a person can drink in his whole life. The facts and figures are amazing. So would you please try to use batteries only when it is necessaryIf possible, give the used ones to the recycling companies so that they will be made into new ones and won’t be able to pollute the environment any more.
Sometimes we become complacent when it comes to recycling, but when you speak in terms of actual facts and figures that everybody can understand, people become much clearer about the problem.
We, as school students, can also join in recycling activities to protect the environment. For example, our class set up a recycling center beside the back door, it is very useful. It is used to collect the waste paper and plastic bottles. In the past, our classmates used to throw all of these into the trashcan. At the very beginning of this collecting activity, it was not so warm-welcomed. Later, more and more people were influenced by the others and joined this collecting activity. Gradually, all the students in our class form a good habit to protect the environment. All of us will now put away the reusable things instead of throwing them into the trashcan.
We should always remember in our mind that protecting the environment is our duty that we can never neglect. Finally would you please let me end this speech with a little poem, “Be kind to the river. Where modern science and technology are concerned I am only a layman I have to say. However, living in this "new age" , seeing my dear ones suffering from respiratory diseases from time to time, finding the beautiful colors of green and blue are being replaced by that of gray and pale, and realizing that our mother planet is getting more and more unhealthy; I cant help trying to offer my idea and my trivial efforts to look for the answer of the question.
As the ancient Greek oracle goes: know thyself. I think in answering this above-mentioned question, this precondition is also very important.
Who are we? This is a question, which should be answered not only by those specialists, but also by every one of human beings.
Some people may proudly say: we are the masters of nature. It is true that the idea of "man can conquer nature" has dominated peoples mind for years, and it is true, man has kept acting like a master and doing whatever things he wants for thousands of years. However, as the consequence of this kind of "leadership" , now the "master" seems to be confronted with problems that are far beyond his control. Facts are really very ample. The
green house effect leaves islands and cities along the coast, such as this oriental pearl-Shanghai, in danger of the disaster of being drowned; the holes of the ozone layer make the earth less suitable to live for some creatures including human beings; the phenomena of EL Nino and La Nina leave the land with serious flood and drought, and the diseases, caused by pollution, are increasing at an incredible speed... Seeing all these facts, can we still ignore the counterattack of nature? We are not the masters of nature. Facing all the disasters made by ourselves, we, mankind as a whole should realize that we are just a normal member of the big family of nature. Any mistreatment towards nature will meet only with the revenge from her.
By saying so, I do not mean we should give a sudden stop to any development. Because that will result in a threat to the existence of human society. I mean we should treat nature equally, leaving the chance of existence and development to nature as we are obtaining the same thing, and thus we will get the situation of win-win.
I am very pleased to find that now more and more people, from every corner of the planet, have come to realize that harmony with nature is the only way to universal and continuous progress and prosperity. And I think that is why we come here from all over the country to discuss this topic today.
I want to end my speech by quoting from Mr. Nixon. "Our destiny offers, not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity." The future is not ours to see of course. it’s my honor to stand here to make the speech. the topic of my speech is “protect the environment, protect ourselves”.
when i was a little girl, i usually played with my friends in the river in front of our house. it was a small river and the water can just submerge our calf. the river was so clean that its bottom can be seen through the water. the tadpole moved freely in the water. the flowers opened here and there. the birds were singing leisurely. that’s the most beautiful scene in my memory about my childhood.
several years passed, the river is no longer like the past look. when i go back my hometown, the river shocks me. waste paper and used coke cans are discarded everywhere. plastic bags fly in the sky and get caught in the trees when the wind blows. garbage floats in the river and pollute the water. i can even hear the cry of the river,“help! help! ”
now, more and more people realize that humans are to blame for the worsening of the earth’s environment, including the climate change and the environmental pollution. our activities today will have a profound impact on society, not only for us, but for many generations to come.
many scientists proved that the climate warming was caused by burning of fossil fuels in factories, buildings and cars. the sea level rises faster than past decades.
on the other hand, a large amount of waste collected from homes, offices and industries end up in landfills. landfills are a major source of pollution. they contain harmful chemicals that can seep into the soil and make it polluted.
protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. firstly, governments should forbid destroying plants, rivers and lakes, oceans, and the atmosphere as well. secondly, voices should be heard to remind the public of the importance of protecting the environment. thirdly, enterprises should pay special attention to the effect they have on the environment and work out solutions to the problems.
only by changing the way we treat the environment can we get along well with it. it’s high time that we unite as one to make up this common cause. no matter young or old, women or men, we are just one people on the lonely planet. protect the environment is to protect ourselves.
